IV Sedation

Hassle-Free and Safe Sedation Options

1. Conscious Oral Sedation

Oral Sedation (a sedative pill taken by mouth) is safe, convenient and economical. When administered by a qualified dentist such as Dr. Toby Gbemi, oral sedation can be very effective at delivering a profound relaxation state. When you come for your free initial consultation, we will review your medical history and determine if oral sedation is the best sedation option for you.

Oral Sedation Procedure

The procedure is simple. When you arrive for your treatment you will be given an oral sedative which will put you into a relaxed and comfortable state. You will be awake but very drowsy. The time you spend in the dentist's chair may feel like minutes. Before you know it, the procedure is over and you may have little recollection of the entire experience. The downside with the pill is that the dosage is difficult to control and the effects may quickly wear off during the appointment.

2. Conscious IV Sedation

Are you are afraid of the dentist or have a fear of dental procedures? An advanced form of dentistry, called Intravenous Sedation dentistry (IV sedation), enables our doctors to completely treat you with a pain-free dental procedure. Dr. Toby Gbemi is one of the few Columbus dentists licensed to perform IV sedation to help you completely relax in a controlled state of sedation.

Our office offers our patients this option of Twilight Sedation for their dental treatment. IV sedation or "twilight sleep” helps you to be comfortable and calm while undergoing dental procedures. IV sedation is designed to better enable you to undergo your dental procedures while you are very relaxed; it will allow you to tolerate as well as not remember those procedures that may be very uncomfortable for you. This modality of sedation will essentially help alleviate the anxiety associated with your treatment. You may not always be asleep but you will be comfortable, calm and relaxed, drifting in and out of sleep - a "twilight sleep.” Another great benefit is that in-office IV sedation eliminates the costly expense of having your treatment carried out in an operating room or at a same-day surgical facility.

Advanced Monitoring and Care

At Southwest Dentistry, we are committed to ensure that your sedation appointment is completely safe. Using state of the art technology, such as EKG, Pulse oximeter, Capnography and Blue-tooth precordial stethoscope, our team monitors your vitals and listens to every breath you take while you are sedated.

In addition, Dr. Gbemi is one of few dentists in Columbus, Ohio with a Conscious/Moderate IV Sedation Dentistry permit. He has undergone an extensive certification process that includes a rigid training program to safely administer and monitor anesthesia in our office. Dr. Gbemi continues to partake in new advanced continuing education to retain licensure and assure a safe environment for our patients.
